Democracy or a challenge to Allah?? –

“And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah . They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying.” (AlQuran 6:116)

There seems to be a general consensus among the most of the so-called civilised world today that democracy is the best system to govern the modern human societies. This system of governance has apparently been successfully practised in the western world and has since been gradually exported to the rest of the world with mixed results and is now the most widely practised system of governance throughout the world with a few not so glaring exceptions.

The basic principle of this system is that sovereignty lies with the people. The people of the society who are being governed have the right to decide how they want the system to be run. What rules they want to be implemented in the society and what rules they want to be done away with. This right of the people is mostly accepted as absolute with no exceptions.

Another basic principle of these modern democracies is secularism which essentially means that the right of the people to decide the rules in the society even supersedes the rights of the Creator/Allah. What the Creator wants to order or forbid is not binding. If the majority of the people decide on a matter, it has to be implemented even if it is against the will of the Creator.

This basic right of the people is mostly delegated to elected representatives who then exercise this right in the parliaments. In some rare situations, this right has been directly exercised by the people through referendums.

One such referendum was recently held in Ireland where Gay and Lesbian marriages were voted by an overwhelming majority to be allowed. Homosexuality is known to be Haram/Not allowed by Allah/Creator according to all religions and scriptures known to man. However, according to the rules of democracy, the collective wisdom of all people in a state was considered above the wisdom of Allah/Creator himself. This is just one example of a host of different rules and laws implemented in the world today under democracies which are widely known to be against the will of The Creator.

In old times, a single human being (King) such as Firaun and Namrood used to challenge the Creator/Allah by refusing to accept His laws. They claimed that in their kingdom, only their own rules and laws will be implemented. They will not accept the Haram/Halal decided by the Creator/Allah but will do what they think is right. They claimed to have the right to deciding the the economic, judicial and social laws of the land.

“And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, “O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?” (AlQuran 43:51)

While Quran clearly tells us that the absolute right to rule is only for Allah.

“Legislation is not but for Allah.” (AlQuran 12:40)

Today, instead of individual kings, whole nations are challenging the Creator/Allah in the name of democracy. The rules and Haram/Halal (allowed/not allowed) decided by the Creator/Allah are discarded & Haram/Halal (allowed/not allowed) are decided by nations based on the collective wisdom of all people.

100 years ago, Iqbal commented on such practices in his poem –

The Devil’s Conference –

Iblees1

(We ourselves have dressed imperialism in the garb of democracy
When man has grown to be a little self‐conscious and self‐observant)

Iblees2

(The true nature of the system of imperialism is different now:
It depends not on the existence of an individual leader or king)

iblees3

(Be it a national assembly or the court of Parviz,
Whoever casts a covetous eye on other’s harvest is a king)

iblees4

(Have you not observed the democratic system of the West?
With a brilliant exterior, its interior is darker than Genghis’s)”

The challengers to the Creator/Allah have put on a different attire in the world of today. To recognise these transgressors is absolutely imperative for all of us. We must understand the rights of Allah and the rights of the people. The absolute right to rule is only for Allah. He has set some boundaries that cannot be transgressed, even if whole of humanity has agreed upon this. There will however be a rule of humans upon humans but only within those set limits. Any legislation that will be done, shall not cross those limits.

“And those are the limits [set by] Allah. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah has certainly wronged himself.” (AlQuran 65:1)

The modern democracy today and the way it has been practised is a clear violation of Allah and a dangerous path to tread on. It is a direct challenge to Allah and an unwise choice to make. Time has proven that whenever man has tried to challenge the Creator/Allah, there has only been One Winner.

“Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of Allah will have a severe punishment, and Allah is exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution.” (AlQuran 3:4)

May Allah guide us all to the right path.
