Younis Khan – The last love
Younis Khan represented a generation of cricket players who witnessed a quantum shift in the batting styles. The rise of T20 meant that batsmen became more attacking and adventurous and the strike rates sored. Younis Khan could not keep up with the speed with which cricket was changing and gradually became less successful in the limited overs cricket. This was not before he captained Pakistan to T20 World cup victory in England.
But the same change meant that his temperament and technique was unrivalled in the longest and the most true form of cricket – The Test Cricket. This helped him achieve the heights that have never been seen by any other Pakistani batsmen. Some of his qualities are best in the world across all times. For example, Younis Khan is the best 4th innings batsman that the world has witnessed in modern cricket. Better than Tendulkar, Kallis, Amla, Lara and Ponting.
More than all this, the thing that won the most hearts was his humbleness despite achieving unprecedented success and integrity despite being surrounded by corrupts, match fixers and cheaters.
I started watching Younis Khan from my teen years when I had emotional attachment with Cricket and he along with Misbah represented my last love with Pakistan cricket. Other interests in life and scandals of match fixing slowly eroded my passion with cricket and I do not think I would ever be able to enjoy watching cricket the same way again after the retirement of Younis Khan.
